Janette Colon-Jorge

Janette Colon- Jorge was born and raised in Puerto Rico. She obtained her Bachelor's Degree at Loyola College in Baltimore, MD and her Master's Degree in Bilingual Education at Kean College. She also obtained a Master's Degree in Administration and Supervision at Seton Hall University. Throughout her 36- year tenure with the Newark Public Schools System, Janette held various positions beginning as a teacher and ending as a Vice Principal. Janette was the first Puerto Rican to be elected Vice President to the Newark Teachers Union. While holding this title she traveled around the United States organizing teachers, and assisting in the process of contract negotiations. She was appointed to the Hispanic Caucus of the American Federation of Teachers and was also elected to LACLA National Board. Janette has been an active member of FOCUS Board of Trustees since 1978 and was instrumental in developing, organizing, carrying through programs. She has chaired all FOCUS Gala events. Aside from FOCUS, Janette likes to keep busy volunteering at Bloomfield Juvenile Conference Committee. She serves as a mentor to teachers in the Newark Public Schools, as well as in Puerto Rico Department of Education. She enjoys reading and traveling. Janette has been happily married to Reynaldo Jorge for 28 years with whom she has a daughter who is currently completing a graduate degree in Occupational Therapy.
