Genoveva Isona was born and raised in Puerto Rico. After obtaining a degree in nursing, Genoveva moved to Brooklyn, NY, where she worked as a nurse at the Eye and Ear Hospital. After a few years, she moved back to PR where she worked at Doctor's Hospital. While in PR, Genoveva decided to begin a new career and enrolled at Interamerican University where she received an associate’s degree. She then transferred to the University of Puerto Rico to complete a bachelor’s degree in Social Work. While visiting family and friends in Newark, NJ, Genoveva was offered a position as Social Worker with the City Welfare Department and decided to stay. After a few years, Gloria Del Toro, who was FOCUS' Acting Director, recommended Genoveva for an interview with the New Jersey Vocational Rehabilitation Services. This led to a position as social worker to which she dedicated many years of service leading to her eventual retirement. Genoveva was quick to become active in the Newark community. She serves as an active Board member for FOCUS, CURA, Maria L Varisco Charter School, and Essex Newark Legal Services. She is also an active member of the First Hispanic Presbyterian Church and the Newark Lyons Club. As a result of her tireless commitment to the community of Newark, Genoveva serves as a mentor and role model for many, and is an example of true dedication and spirit for all those who are in her presence.
